Well, I think the easiest thing to do is install a Passat cupholder.  I
have one in my Scirocco, it's a neat little folding type thing.  It
mounts onto a vertical surface, the cupholder rings fold down, and the
bottom folds up, so it only protrudes about 1/2 inch when not in use.
