Just read the VW TSB (Technical Service Bulletin), from January 22, 1987
...Subject-Oil baffle for crankshaft.

"As a result of the crankase breather location, engine oil can be drawn
in through the breather hose and deposited on the air filter element,
during high engine RPM's or hard cornering."

"To eliminate the cause of these deposits, replace the existing oil pump
splash shield with baffle-P/N 027 103 623."

I KNOW motor oil on my K & N filter has been keeping me from some
horsepower!  

p.s.  you guys have to get an AllData CD rom...It has a lot of great
stuff the dealers have to work from, beyond the Bentley.  It's not
better than the Bentley or as complete, but for about $30, you get all
the TSB's and access to a lot of information about your car!  Search for
"Alldata" on Yahoo.
