Salvage fee.

     Actually, here in NYS, they will give you a "totaled" price that they 
will pay you for the car and then they take it, or, if you wish to keep the 
car, you can "buy it back" from them at salvage cost, which means that they 
take away the salvage cost from the totaled price they would pay you for the 
car if they had asessed it as totaled.

     A friend of mine had his car totaled and he took the money.  The 
insurance company took the car, then turned around and sold it to a garage 
who then repaired it and sold it to someone. Reason I know this is because 
another friend works at a shop and it came in for an oil change or something, 
the front end repaired, the givaway was that it was a Burgundy '93 5-speed 
Fox Polo w/1.8l and the nose was a slightly different color.  There aren't 
very many of those floating around this area.  It was a nice car.  I don't 
understand why he didn't get it fixed.
