Thanks for the tip, Andre.  I should have mentioned that I've already
tried
#1, and my fan works perfectly when jumpered and also when the A/C is
on.  So I'm using the "turn on the A/C so the car doesn't overheat"
trick to
avoid serious trouble.  And my thermoswitch is brand new from the VW
dealer.
