Although a '77 I had the same symptoms. Had to replace fuel pump. Part of 
the key is that the problem is worse at high ambient temperatures. The 
parts of the pump heat up and clearances open so it cannot maintain pressure.
Garages have difficulty finding it because they tend to work in the shade and
do what they can to keep the mechanics comfortable, which makes the problem 
go away. Sort of the FI equivalent to vapor lock, except the heat is ambient,
not from a hot engine. The pumps wear significantly if not pumping gas, so if
you've ever run out of gas, you're asking for it. Thats why gas gauges are
setup these days so when it says 'E' you often have a couple gallons left. 
The manufacturers do not want you running out of gas, not because of the 
"free" roadside assistance but because of the damage to fuel pump.
