I just had this problem and it turned out to be a disc shaped seal that lies
beneath the cv joint.  I had the shaft assy off and saw that it was chewed up
and leaking into my inner cv boot.  The seal was about $2, popped it in,
repacked the cv, bolted it back up, refilled the tranny, and it hasn't leaked
since.
