Re: Rebuilding a shortblock



Assuming you don't want to have it align bored or bored for more
displacement, at least mike or have the cylinders miked to make sure they
are still more or less round and that you do not need oversized pistons.
No use putting new round rings into an old square cylinder.  Lightly
Breaking the glaze band leaving a nice cross hatch pattern will help new
rings seat.  Just a few passes with the glaze breaker.  Remember to use
some honing lube.  Also check for scoring and ridges.

(In other applications you can get away with using *slightly* oversized
rings with the original pistons [now "undersized"] but I'm not sure if you
can get away with that with a VW engine.  I don't know about current
practice, but racing engines used to have substantial gaps between pistons
and cylinder walls for reduced friction.  They had a lot of "piston slap"
until the engine was warmed up. This is not so good for street engines
though.)
