Well, Car and Driver did a test when the Scirocco two came out (this is all in "The VW Chronicles" book) and they ran the 
two head to head.  The Scirocco II had the 1.7L and the Scirocco I had the 1.6L with 160lbs less weight.  They said that 
the Sciroccos both pulled off the line evenly and then the SII pulled away by 60+mph and was a car length ahead by 
85mph.  That's a pretty good description.
