How many revs?

I just spent the day at a performance driving school, and I first of all
have to say that it was the best $200 I ever spent. For the excitement and
thrills 'n' chills alone, it was worth it. But I also learned about trail
braking and vehicle dynamics that I probably would never have consciously
picked up on driving fast on the street. What a rush!

Anyway, back to my subject. The cars we used were race-prepped Toyota
Corolla GTSes, with stock motors but modified injection, ignition, and
exhaust combining for about 140hp. According to my own experience, these
1.6L engines gave significant power up to 7500, and according to the
instructors they could turn up to 9000rpm fairly reliably. This got me
wondering - have I got similar potential with my 1.8L 16v? More
specifically, assuming that the top end could be modified to run at 8 or
9000 revs, would the stock bottom end be up to the task too? The Corollas
are about the same vintage as my rocco, and I'd like to think that VW
engineered their motors at least as well as Toyota....
