Actually, he found out for sure today that all was okay. He has some
computer program that has diagrams of different parts of the engine to
give a person an idea of what their up against before they start taking
everything apart. For some reason, VW made some alterations between
some of the gadgets involved with timing, but these gadgets still allow
the same belt to be used. He simply erred on the side of caution by not
putting the new belt on for fear of having to do the job twice. Also,
because the serial numbers were all sanded off, he wanted to wait until
today (saturday morning) b4 so he could call around for extra info.

He charged me for 2.5 hours work, so I assume that that is alright. He
also worked on my shifter assy for awhile as well.

However, I think I'll be taking it back to him cuz it drives like sh*t
now. When starting off the line or shifting at low rpms, it almost
wants to stall. It seems to rev without a problem, but I'm not going to
be winning any races with the car in this shape. Does this mean that
the timing is too (s)low, or too fast? This will be my first time
trying to understand timing and how it affects a car.
