power windows

ok 2 out of 2 friends with power windows in their sciroccos have a window
that doesnt work.

So, i'll now assume VW power windows are pretty common problem areas.

What usually breaks? motor, switch, wiring problem, control unit?  is
there a control unit? where can I find this legendary unit?  I know that
honda (ewwwwww!, I know what you guys think of them)  power windows have
a control unit that goes all the time.

Any advice would be appreciated, I really am not impressed by power stuff
and only have experience with that honda I fixed and what I heard then. 
Give me the good ol' crank!  But, I seem to be pretty much alone as
everyone wants power everything, steering, windows, mirrors, sunroof,
seats, cupholders, glovebox openers.......
