I would have to agree with this diagnosis Shawn gave from MHO.  I just went
through the same situation about a month ago.  Everything I thought was broken
was actually in great shape.  I finally stripped the struts off and replaced
the "strut bearings" and Waaaa Laaaa she was like new again.
