Scirocco TDI Follow Up

Hey guys,

Thanks for all of the responses.

First of all, I should say that was my first post. I don't currently
have a Scirocco, although I lusted after them in High School and I still
want one in the worst way. I have a '93 Corrado SLC....GREAT car IMHO,
but the monthly payments for a lowly college grad w/ student loans, etc.
has left little $ for racing :(

As far as the TDI idea, it stems from two things. First of all, a TDI
jetta is my dream commuter car...50mpg, diesel longevity, and a car
which is a torque monster.(149ft-lbs, stock @2000rpm.) Abt has a diesel
chip which brings it up to 115hp, 190ft-lbs. That's only an ecu, and
it's more torque than the VR6 at half the revs. Unfortuately, with one
car I can barely pay for, that possibility is out of the question. I've
often thought about doing a swap into an early, light chassis, but have
been put off by what I figure the high cost of the drivetrain would be.

I was talking with a friend of mine, who was also interested in this
idea, esp. in a Scirocco. As something to rack up work miles in, I
figured a TDI Scirocco II 8V would be perfect.....lighter than the 16V
w/drum brakes, hopefully fewer electrical accessories to go wrong, etc.
With the right gearing, the thing should cruise at around 2-2.5K rpms,
right where that 149ft. lbs is peaking...... (BIG smile) I figure the
thing would get 50-60mpg, last forever, and have GREAT passing power
(I'd install a short shift kit to help w/ those 3K rpms shifts!!)
