Hey Maurice,

If you can peform those things mentioned, you'll have no problem with 
swapping a VW engine. The A1 is definetly easiest done by dropping it 
from the bottom. Sure, a hoist makes these things a whole lot easier, but 
I've performed this procedure with a floor jack, and an extra pair of hands 
many times.

place jack under engine/tranny, unbolt, lower down. Carfully 
wiggle the engine off the jack and let it rest on the floor. Then, raise 
the car up with the jack, get inovative (please be carful though), 
eventually you'll get the car high enough to slide the engine out. If you 
need more details or such, just ask.
