Gas capacity......  yeah, what's the deal??

I just got an owner's manual (useless, just about) from the VW dealer and
it says my tank capacity is 10.3gallons, but I've put in up to 11.7! a
number of times.

Also, I've been looking to see if my '84 has points, or the electronic
conversion. There is a 4-wire plug which runs to a cylindrical unit with
the Bosch written on it bolted to the firewall.  Is this the conversion?

Was this a stock option, or something that had to be done? I have no idea
what work previous owners have done to this machine.

|12 Galons?? I thought we had 11 galon tanks? The most ive ever pumped
|into my car was 10.2 galons. (Obviously not completely empty.) Well,
|except for the AM-PM a few weeks ago where somehow I pumped 14 gallons
|into my car and I had a little over 1/4 tank when I started. Go figure. 
|I dunno, I kinda think your figures might be off a bit. Your car, in
|theory, should be getting better fuel economy than before. 
|The only thing I can think of is poor injector spray pattern or something
|to do with dumping raw fuel into the intake system. Hmmmm.
