Actually, this is generally not the case. A set of _rebuilt_ CV's on
an axle _is_ cheaper, but I talked it over with Mark and he said that
the rebuilt units would be great for a daily driver, back and forth
to work, store whatever. But if I was going to race, autocross or put
larger then 'normal' stress on them, then they were probably not going
to be worth the savings. The reason being is that the rebuilt units
use larger then stock balls and the seats are remachined. This defeats
the original surface hardening as I understand it.

A new axle with new CV's are ~$280 from Mark (AAB), ~$320 from Techtonics
for comparison sake. Rebuilt units are less.
New CV's & boot kits (per axle) are ~$200 from Mark, ~$250 from Velocity
for comparison sake.

Rebuilding the units myself on my axles saved me about ~$160 and got me
all new parts that I know will be put together correctly. :-) I'll take
a 20-25% savings every time.

As far as your noise, jack up the front of your car and check out your
CVs. Should only take a few minutes. Twist pull (shout if necessary)
and see if they move. Any clanking or movement outside of a little
differential slack indicates a worn CV joint. But you probably know
this already...
