Cooling fan thermoswitch replacement

I need to replace the cooling fan thermoswitch on my '88, and was
wondering if the switch is in direct contact with the coolant.  If so,
it would seem that I'd need to drain the coolant first.  If not, then I
can make the switch in about 5 minutes.  No help from Bentley here,
so which is it?
