Sorry to hear about this.
What is worst case scenario mean? He wakes up has a bad day and decides
to charge more? I can't remember what my mechanic charged to do my
clutch but I know it wasn't more than $250. I guess I'm lucky after
hearing what other people pay. My mechanic always seems to be very
reasonable and is very good also. 

The most I've ever spend there was a little over $500 and he did a shit
load of work that day. The car was so much better I didn't recognize it.
