speedo cable install

What is the best way to get that stupid speedo cable into the trans?  The grommet that 
surrounds it is so hard to press in there and it's really awkward reaching in there.  Does 
anyone have a good technique?  I am going to open up the end of the trans tomorrow too 
and I just want to make sure that the green cap on the end needs to be pierced through to 
be able to pull it out, right?  The Bently says this.  I guess I'll have to find a new one 
tomorrow before taking the old one off.  Thanks a lot,
