Wheel Refurbishment

I have a friend who is at the moment refurbishing his Avus alloys on his 
1990 Scala (1.8 injection). He's having great problems removing the 
lacquer to get at the corrosion on the polished areas. He's tried some 
of the better known (in the UK) paint strippers, without much success. 
At the moment he is having to remove the lacquer manually with a power 
drill and sand/glass paper, before polishing the wheel up. Can anybody 
suggest an easier way to do this ? Thanks, Sean Conway.
