throttle body *answers*

guys, the only models that came with the restrictor were the ones with EGR
(exhaust gas recirculation). I think that was '78 and back a few years.
there'll be no such free hp for the most of us. the restrictor was there to
increase the velocity of air going through the primary throttle port. this
was an effort to get more exhaust gas into the intake mixture (to reduce
emissions of oxides of nitrogen -cheaper than a cat).

btw, if you want a bigger throttle body on a later A1 car, just take a
Golf-type and swap the linkage to that which came on the original. *Voila!*
you've got a free "Neuspeed" throttle body with the same exact power increase
characteristics. i.e. there is no increase unless you match port your intake
manifold. then expect maybe 5hp or so. the greatest airflow bottlenecks in
our cars are the cylinder heads, though, not the manifolds... going with the
80mm GTi airflow sensor is an excellent idea, too, however.
