I just did it on my '85 and I didn't have to remove any fabric.
I used my rag puller which is a 3' long, flexible metal tube that
has a retractable claw on one end.  It's supposed to be used to 
pull rags through gun barrels for cleaning.  Anyway, I was able
to pull the new cable through the back of the seat without doing
any cutting.  I would imagine that you could use any stiff wire 
and some tape to pull the cable through.
