Re: Scriocco speedometer etc...

All the descriptions of why turning radiuss get changed are good. The picture
of the rack and all did get tweaked on my computer but I think it can be
understood anyway. For the fella who said he had no change in turns lock to
lock it can be pretty small for a nominally off centered wheel. My car had
around 45 degrees off center after I bounced off a jersey barrier last winter,
so that would have thrown my turns off qutie a bit.

Alignment doesnt mean that the steering wheel is straight or the car goes
straight. It means that front wheels are aligned with respect to either the
center line of the car (centerline alignment) or the non adjustable alignment
of your rear wheels (thrust angle alignment). Tire wear is proabably the best
way to judge if your alignments off without measuring it. If you just go by
the wheel being straight, someone could have just moved it or both wheels could
be equally off in either camber or toe. If you just go by the car not pulling
then you could again have each wheel equally off. When I did my balljoints a
while ago I assumed this and watched my new tires turn into slicks in 4000
miles. Also if you centerline your car you will have the wheel off center
anyway if your rear is out of alignment at all.

OK, now for a question of my own. Camber is easy enough to set yourself with
a guage but how do you set toe without going to a shop? EC had a blurb in the
letters section that said you could do it by taking time and measuring and
calculating, how? Also someone said 1/4" of toe out or something like that,
toe is in degrees, isn't it? I'm really sick of seeing my money go to someone
to align my car when it could be going to so many usefull things, maybe even
good tires. I've only had new tires once, and lost them to my alignment
anyway. They were junk, pirelli p6's. I cant believe I let a friend talk me
into believing they were any good.
