Then oxygen sensors were mentioned as possible culprits. I had a similar
problem where my car was hard to start and and would idle around 900 but
when warm, it would climb to 1500. I checked and swapped the auxiliary air
regulator and cold start valve from my '81 S which starts and idles
correctly but the problem didn't really go away (I actually did some
troubleshooting). So I got the brilliant idea to turn the idle speed down.
Now it has a cold idle around 1000 and a warm idle of about the same
speed. The kicker is that if the car sits for a bit then is restarted,
everything seems fine for a minute or two, then the idle drops to 500 and
below unless I keep my foot on the accel. If I run for a 10-15 minutes
(the freeway part of my commute), then the idle is pretty stable. I'm
guessing that the previous owner increased the idle to keep it from dying
after a warm restart.

Anyway, the talk of oxygen sensors has got me thinking that maybe I should
replace mine and see what happens. The problem is that when I went to get
my car smogged a week ago, it was running too rich so the CO adjust was
adjusted leaner. If the car was running too rich because the oxygen sensor
was going bad and the mixture was made leaner to compensate for it, will I
melt my engine if I put in a correctly working oxygen sensor? Or should I
be kicked in the arse for even suspecting the oxygen sensor? Any input is
appreciated, b--------
