The only other way is to remove the engine and I for one, don't recomend that
route!
Dropping the tranny is pretty easy on VW's. You can do it without pulling the
axles out of the car. Just disconnect the axles at the hubs and let them sit
there connected to the tranny. (Im sure someone will gripe about saying this
too.) Drop the front, rear and trany motor mounts and let the engine down.
This will give you a good angle to split the tranny from theengine. You wont
need to move the tranny far to get into the clutch. It's really quite easy to
do, it's just a little dirty (Unless your like me and keep everything as
greasless as possible!) and time consuming.
