Miles,

My compressor died about a week ago. I decided to put it off as it's
probably going to start cooling down in about two weeks. It's now around 85F,
which I can bare for another 15 days :)

Anyways, the compressor, drier and expansion valve costs a total of
$690. Estimated labor was $250 plus vac+gas around $140. After taxes and
conversion to US, that works out to about $900. err.. this is NOT an a VW
dealer either..

I don't know if this is a good idea or not but I bought a second hand
compressor for $45. I'm going to try replacing it myself with the help of a
friend who changed a compressor on a CRX. I think the only thing I'll have to
get professionally done is the vac+gas.

Anyone know how you'd check a second hand compressor?

I recently took my 82 Scirocco to a shop to have the AC checked
and filled. This car has the York compressor, which I replaced
about 5 years ago along with the drier and condensor. At the time,
these parts totalled about $250 from the since defunct Apec.

Now these guys have given me an estimate of, get this, $856 to
replace the compressor, drier, and expansion valve! The compressor
alone, they claimed, was $400. Needless to say I told them to
get bent and yanked the car out of the shop. You'd think they
were doing a conversion to R-134 at these prices!

Any recommendation for AC service in the Houston area would
be welcome. I need to locate the rare shop that doesn't assume
all of their customers are complete idiots. I'll let you know what
happens...
