2L 16v engine work ok with (base) CIS?

I need a smaller Earl.
OTOH, despite his size he's very cooperative and almost always seems to come 
up with the right part when any of the MD crew or my nephew need something. 
;^)
Then there's Tranny Earl. He too is cooperative, but he's stinky, he's 
frequently dirty and getting dirtier it seems, and he's pretty much trying 
to take over my garage!

I don't have an Earl... well, unless you count a bare TDI engine and 02J. 
:P  I have a handful of CIS stuff but that's not worth anything.  I need a 
bigger Earl.  :(

God bless Earl. I, for one, will never ever question your need for a
relationship with Earl. Hmm, wonder what I should name my pile of
 parts? It
sure is handy. My alternator bracket setup has TD AND TDI parts in it,
 and
I was sure glad packratting had been done...
