The real question is, when you turn your car on, does it return the favour...

This has been a frustrating year of Scirocco ownership with those little teases of joyfulness thrown in just to keep you from tossing the car off of a cliff. My "impulse buy" Mk1 has really inspired me and infected me bad with the Mk1 syndrome. My old '84 has been sold, then quickly sold again and I have been assured that someone is making it a proper driver. Ever since I got the '81 things have felt a little strange. Many of you remember the problems I had with CIS-E and it never really felt like it ran right. The car was also shrouded in mystery trying to figure out what someone else's ideas and intentions were. I did verify that it is in fact an Audi 3A block. The compression readings were higher than a 10:1 16v so something is up there. It's supposed to have a ported JH head- I can verify that it's a JH but who knows on the porting. It was supposed to have a G cam but it's much MUCH bigger than that- I can barely get the thinnest feeler
gauge between the lobes and the journals. Wiring is a total nightmare. The taillights have never worked, but the brake and turns do. That led me to pull the fuse panel and start pin-testing everything. Still have not found the problem- the only thing I can think of is a shorted/severed wire from the fuse panel to the taillights. In an order to get it running proper for TDN, I was going to swap out the CIS-E stuff for CIS-Basic. Well, I was sold a bum CIS-Basic unit. (that I thankfully did not pay much for) And, things get better. My fiancee and I have been kicked out of our apartment (long story but our landlady is completely illogical and irrational and overly-emotional) so we have to be out by December 28'th. We've found a nice new place (but it has a smaller garage) and I need to figure out something so I can drive it to the new place, as it's silly to rent a tow dolly to move the car 1 mile through town. I haven't even really looked at
the car for about two months so maybe with fresh eyes I can spot something I missed.

Oh yeah, that reminds me about another issue. I still don't have the dammed title for the car yet. The title was not filled out properly so I paid $20 to have it sent back to the previous owner through Fed-Ex, and lo and behold, Fed-Ex lost it. So now I have to send the registration and hope and pray that it makes it, wait 6 weeks for a new title, have the PO send it back and hope and pray again it does not get lost, THEN switch it over. Rawr.

Also, the TDI swap will probably have to wait until next winter, I just don't have the funds to get everything I need this year. But I'd really like to get the car driving by springtime, that would save me a bucket of money over driving the Jeep (which apparently nobody wants to buy right before winter????) so that way I can drive it to Cincy and get the TDI stuff in order for the year after. So the question arises once again- how should I go about getting the stupid car to run? Swap in Digifant? Try another CIS unit? Megasquirt? I'd love to work on a MS project, but cost wise probably not the best thing to do since it will be pulled in a year, although selling the complete engine with working MS would be a nice incentive for someone to buy it. Suggestions are welcome. :)

Things are downright crappy now but plans are in place and hopefully by spring things will be looking up. Of course it would help if someone would buy my Jeep, I have found another nice early '84 Scirocco that would make a great DD.... :P

stole that from a cadillac ad...but it made me think of Sciroccos. So
let's talk about the joys, I've been cruising through my old emails
and it's been a hell of a roller coaster ride this year. But I like
roller coasters! So how was your car's year? What worked, what
didn't?????
