Possible buying a MKI......maybe looking for a really nice one.

So true that statement. I also at first thought the Mk2's were cooler, until Cincy '06. Mainly Ben's lean and low charcoal-grey Mk1. The more I looked at them, the more I wanted one. So I found a nice Washington State example and did an "impulse buy". I knew it wasn't perfect just looking at the e-bay ad, and I probably paid more than I should have, but it's wonderful. And it just so happened to be the same damn color as Ben's. :P I would be willing to bet it's about as rust-free as a Mk1 can get that's not been a garage queen it's whole life. Floor and underneath is nearly spotless, interior is really nice. It was in an accident, but the repairs were done well and the only thing that is not to my liking is the fix on the front crossmember that I will be fixing eventually. It's been painted, not really well but better than most. I'll be stripping it down and painting it again anyway, not only for a change of color but so it's done the way I
want it. Then of course the TDI-swap..... While the car was pretty damn nice when I bought it and could have driven it as-is, I have to go messing with things instead. I think it's a personality trait that most of us have- the need to mess with stuff. :P

I guess the point is, unless you are laying out a LOT of money on a car, you will have to put some love in it somewhere. If you're like me, there is ALWAYS something that does not fit my personal criteria. Find a nice car you can work with and go from there.

Once you've gone MKI you can never go back.
Good luck, I looked for a long time till I found Victor, and I know for
a fact the PO misses him :)
