Found my running problem, and it SUCKS!!!!



I've not done a compression test.... yet.  The engine was rebuilt about 50k ago so I *assumed* it would be ok.  That might be my problem right there- assumption.  I did a full vac leak check as soon as I picked up the car.  ;)  I'm pretty sure cam timing is good, although it has an adjustable cam gear and finding TDC on it is weird- I'm not sure which mark is supposed to be used for TDC.  It does not have the "dot" on the inner rim of the gear to match up with the valve cover.  Apparently this head has been worked a little, so it could have been decked as well, as the timing gear was set up full advance.  I set it back to middle and I did not notice a difference.  I'll do a compression test real quick when I change the plugs.  Gah.  I still have to replace the pass/driver side engine mount!  Went to the NASCAR race in Charlotte last weekend.  Great time but I would have rather been wrenching on Sciroccos.

Have you checked the basics such as cylinder compression, cam timing, vacuum 
leaks?
