Found my running problem, and it SUCKS!!!!

An update..... I pulled the injectors from the '84- (looked like OEM, they were Bosch, plus they also had the VW-AUDI emblems on them, the ones in the '81 did NOT) and swapped them into the '81, a quick test of the spray patterns and they looked great. Also took the 0-rings out of the 84 as I knew they had been replaced not more than a year ago. The '81 really feels better- idles a little smoother but still rougher than I'd like. It still hesitates off-idle about 10% of the time. Also, it still really does not feel like it's running at 100% power, as I swore the basically stock 1.8 8v in the 84 (with 300k) was quicker. With a 2.0 at 10:1, ported JH head, and a G-cam, this thing should fly.

A summary: I've tested everything electrical that I can possibly test. The exception- ISV duty cycle. I've also not done a pin-out test on the ECU or knock box or any of that. I've swapped the junk ignition components for all the good stuff the '84 had, a new-ish 16v coil, Neuspeed wires, OEM Bosch cap, and a decent set of Bosch plugs. The plugs were fouled up a little, I plan on replacing them soon. I built a DPR harness and set it to around 7.5-8. (made no difference when it was set to 10) I swapped the fuel pump from the 84, which was only about 6 months old. New fuel filter. I've run 3 tanks of gas through it since I received it, each time with fuel system cleaner. I plan on checking lifter adjustment when I replace the valve cover with a G60 unit.

Another curious oddity- when shutting the car off, it will sometimes diesel- i.e. after clicking the key off, it will kick and fire a few more times. The Bentley says this is a timing issue, but I've set and re-set the timing??? I have the timing set just a hair below where it starts to ping- which is just a tad above stock timing.

About all that's left to do is just wait until I yank this engine and drop in the TDI. :P

Did you check your fuel pressure? I'm not sure, but would fuel pressure
too low cause a bad pattern?
