OT: Computer advice requested

Some good advice on here.  The general rule, as we all know, is that you get what you pay for.  That being said, and working for a hardware reseller, I would suggest a laptop from Lenovo/IBM.  We used to sell Acer, then Toshiba (laptops) and had nothing but problems with both lines, you usually pay a little more for an IBM but they really are the best in the market.  In my opinion, the toughbooks are a little more overpriced for what they are, and those are designed to withstand EXTREME conditions- which I doubt you will be subjecting them through- and from what I have seen the IBM's are the next step down from the toughbook in durability.  Check out this site: http://shop.lenovo.com/us/notebooks  and take a look.  The "3000" series are more of a casual user-type laptop while the Thinkpads are better suited for business/poweruser types.  The thinkpads are worth the extra you will pay for them, with heavy-duty hinges and an overall more durable feel.  The company I work for
 is in the top 10 resellers of Lenovo/IBM products in Ohio, and I might be able to pull some strings and get you one a tad cheaper than the site.  ;)  If you decide quick enough, I can even deliver it to you at Cincy.  :P  Let me know!

Okay, I've got a really old laptop that eventually I'm going to have to
replace. I think what I'll do is buy a new but inexpensive laptop for use
running MS and to do school stuff like recording marks, and later get
something that is better for manipulating digital still images (perhaps a
desktop), I still do not know the digital darkroom well, but am already
frustrated at the slowness of shuffling 10Mpixel files around on this
machine. The only other things I'd need a machine for would be simple word
processing and running iTunes, just to load music files onto my iPod
shuffle. I have no need of anything fancy for gaming or video, and probably
don't need to burn DVDs. Likely a really basic machine will be more than
what I need. SO...what am I looking at as far as specs? And what are your
suggestions as far as durability goes? It'll get banged around a bit
getting in and out of the car I imagine and I'm pretty sick of wrenching on
my old Latitude and would prefer something not prone to breaking.
Durability is probably more important than features.
