Good and Bad Road trip(long)

Roger, it sounds like you were low on tranny fluid.  Telltale sign is
popping out of 5th on the highway.  It may have been saved with a top
of tranny fluid at a gas station along the way, but by the sounds of
it you may have fucked the tranny up by the end of your trip...

Remove the fill plug off the side of the tranny and see if it's low
(fluid should be level with the bottom of the hole, or level + a 1/2
litre depending on whether you have a high or low filler hole tranny).
 If it's low look for any fluid leaking out the bottom of the
bellhousing or 5th gear cover and cap(not very likely), then check
your axle seals (more likely to be the culprit).  If they're ok, pop
off the inner cv's and check the inner seals (your cv grease will be
diluted if there's a leak).  Can't hurt to top up the fluid and take
it for a rip and see if the tranny is still ok.  Whether or not it's
trustable now is debatable though.  I'll let the tranny experts of the
list chime in on that one...
