SPAM-LOW: Re: RIP Clutch 87 Scirocco

No problem....

What a deal, but I'd hate to have any part in that...

Yes, the Callaway is an 8v. I consulted the Jedi Council, Master Obi-Dan
himself said that minus the disk, the rest of it would be a decent upgrade
to the Callaway. The shop had an 8v disk new for like 30. So I would be
using pressure plate and all that from the 16v kit.

In light of recent developments I got my kit back (as my car is still in
pieces) and I will use that for said clutch job to commence tommorow with
time blocked for the rest of the weekend (knowing me) And I will simply get
an 8v clutch kit for the Callaway in a week or two.

Thrust plate... gotcha... I still have to pull it apart so may as well do
the whole thing right? Engine off I can easily put the car in any gear.

A 16v disk I do have. Thanks for the offer.

What a pain that was. (towing) I didn't have the money (heck I still owe
Cathy) so I had to get permission for it to be put on my company card with
the understanding that I would pay it back asap. Then once here American
Express repeatedly denied the transaction saying that it wasn't authorized.
Of course by this point home office types are gone as they are the East
Coast... The damn driver wanted to put the car back on the rig and take it
back to BFE Washington. If I couldn't pay in a reasonable time it would go
to auction. Bastages one and all.

Speaking of which he said he had a 2000 Audi Quattro going to auction early
July. Expects maybe $300 for it. Car was HORRIBLY T-Boned. I think he
said there was a fatality--possibly the other driver I didn't really catch
the details. He said engine, tranny are fine. One of the rear wheels is
angled, it definately isn't something that can be repaired. I may have the
guys number or at least can get it from AMEX if anyone is interested. He
wants it to go to auction though, not sure if he would sell direct. Other
than the wheel and the fact that the drivers door is in the drivers seat
(also accordioned), he thinks someone could start it up and move it under
it's own power.

Hopefully the thrust plate, just got a hole in it.

This is caused over time from the machining affect of the 020 clutch

	pushrod.

Btw, the Callaway is probably an 8V, and the disc is different.

Well. Now that my $311 rectal exam is over thanks to Boris the
Towtruck
Driver... Do you know how painful it was to endure 3 hours with
"That is
Scorpio Yes?" Actually it was more like "J'yes".

"And Scorpio have TDI eeeengeeene... Jyes?"

OMG All I could think was LET IT END. Dear God Lord in Heaven... No
more
"Allah" jokes I swear, just make it stop.

	Sigh.

Here is what happened. For as long as I can remember there has been
a
little bit of a shudder when the clutch is released to a certain
point.
Mostly I notice in first gear (it still does it other gears) I
didn't do the
clutch last time out so I assumed it was a misalignment. Well the
last week
or so it seemed to be a little worse wasn't really sure until today
when it
was kinda violent... almost like a noob stalling it.

When it was rolling it did not want to go into any lower gears
(downshifting
for a stop light) At a stop all gears worked fine. Stopped for gas
and
food, then as I was leaving the gas station got the violent shaking
a little
gave it more gas was ok... Drove toward the onramp got up to 3rd
gear, and
tried to downshift to 2nd for the turn. Wouldn't go lower... Kept
it in
third accelerated briskly went to 4th merged with traffic and
finally put it
in 5th. As I was putting it in 5th gear the clutch went to the
floor with
the barest hint of resistance. I am in 5th gear rolling at highway
speeds
and it won't come out of 5th, pushing the clutch in only causes RPMs
to
raise as if slipping but does not disengage clutch. (no significant
loss in
fwd momentum) I got 80 miles before I had to stop at an accident.
At that
point it died with no way to get it into gear again. (I tried to
get it in
a couple time with no joy. It was stop and go for miles so it
didn't really
matter. Threw in the towel and made a hot date with Boris.

I was able to maintain speed so the clutch disk isn't GONE but I
think
something gave way not sure what I will crack it open tommorow am I
suppose.
The clutch was near the end of it's life as I was out of
adjustment--or at
least to the end of it. I think the friction disk or the pressure
plate
tines partially collapsed. Any suggestions or ideas?

BTW clutch cable seems to be intact with no problems. That one was
replaced
	about this time last year.

I have a clutch kit (I stole it back from the Callaway) and I can
get a new
cable (I always replace those as a matter of principle) I am gonna
pull it
apart tommorow and hopefully there isn't a transmission problem.
