Which to buy if either/ Struts

Hi Julie, other Karl, and list;

Might be just me but I always found it much easier to seperate the strut
assembly from the hub carrier at the alignment adjust bolts. Two bolts at
the hub carrier end, two nuts at the top holding the strut bearing... easy.
Before you pull the lower (alignment) bolts, use a scratch awl to scribe
a trace along the edge where the 'bracket' of the strut covers the upright
from the hub carrier, directly inboard from the bolts. If you're precise
with the marking and careful in reassembly, you'll be right on original
alignment or near 'nuff it won't matter. But if you want to be sure, what's
an alignment cost, $35-50 or so? Much less hassle (I think) than messing
with (and possibly damaging) CV's, tie rod ends and ball joints.
No preference from me on brand. I've used KYB, Monroe, been happy with
'em. I use for DD, so if you're looking for hipo or race, go with the
consensus of the list. [ Julie; Mike or Dave who?]
In any case, when you replace the struts, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. Most
strut cartridge inserts have a spacer to be installed on top of the insert,
I think someone on the list posted a while back; problem relating to "oops,
forgot to put that in" which left the cartridge loose in the asembly.
Also, be sure to replace the strut bearings, bump stops, and dust covers
(new parts for everything). Bearings are critical, stops and covers not so
but they're cheap and the only way to replace them is to disassemble the
strut. So might as well do 'em now.
    My $.02.

Karl
