Bib question ('05 GTI)

My Mk2 Jetta does that from the trunk but it's the vacuum pump for the pneumatic door locks, but I can't see you having air pressure in an 05 GTI unless it has something to do with automatically pressurizing your tires. It wouldn't be the fuel primer either because it only runs when you turn on the ignition and you're talking about something that happens before that. This is out of my area of understanding, but at least I can tell you what it's not. Great help I'm sure.

More often than not, when I unlock the car and open the driver's door,
I can hear an electric motor whirring for a moment. By the time I can
sit in the car, it's stopped.

  Anyone know what it is?
