differential took a poop

my diff just went out today it was a big hassle we couldnt get a tow because of the superbowl so we waited around for like 2 hours and finaly we got a tow from one of our freinds and now its time to replace it i was wondering how much it was going to cost and and maybe anything else that i should do while the car is down and the tranny is out? im on a low buget for one any help?
