Automatic adjusting clutch cable question

This is the only car I've ever had with one of these things.  So I just 
took the '88 for a little
drive and from a stop, going up a mild hill the tach jumped way ahead of 
the speedometer.
So I think the clutch is probably tired, but could this be the cable and 
how would I know?
It's so much easier with the adjustable ones, if it is the clutch I think 
it will also receive a
new cable.
