light thingy

The shift light works off the same fuses as the rest of the idiot lights IIRC and there is should be no relay involved.
The light is supposed to come on at light engine load when the RPM is over a certain point, which I think is 2000 RPM. Giving it more throttle should make the light go out. There is a vacuum switch in the vacuum line to the distributor (it's about an inch in diameter with two vacuum ports and a two wire plug pretty close to the distributor) that closes at high vacuum and turns on the light. If applying more throttle, floor it just to be sure, doesn't make the light go out then the switch is probably bad. If the light is just irritating, then unplugging the switch will keep it off.

I'm not sure I know what you mean when you say the dashboard goes dark with the lights on. The instrument lights don't light?

I don't know of any heater core recall, but I'm not on top of these things.
A new core can be had from www.germanautoparts.com for under $77. Labor to put it in is another matter.

my shift key-thingy blinks on pretty much anytime i have my foot on the gas. my biggest prob is sometimes i think my oil light is flickering, and freak out and have to stop and check (i drove a saturn completly dry once. bad scene.) ive mentioned that my dashboard goes dark when i turn my lights on- is the shifty thing another relay gone bad?

-P.S. anyone heard of a heater core recall for pretty much any scirocco?
