I went back and asked Mark Twain:

Yankee (yan-kee) n. An overpaid curd-guzzling pretty-boy who runs
god-fearing folks off the road of life with the cow-catcher on his sport
utility chariot because they told him that they weren't interested in
seeing him buy his way in to the grand cotillion again this year with
his tainted doubloons borne of entertainment parchment sales in his
Brobdingnagian home district.
