starter question

I tried jumping my vehicle and it was like it had a bad battery or starter. 
Tested the battery and it was good so I ass-u-med it was the starter because 
it was almost like it had a bad spot on the starter (ie turn the ignition 
nothing,  turn the ignition maybe it would turn over some) after the running 
start method we hooked it to a tester.  Battery good, alternator voltage 
good, but hook it up to the battery while it was running and the charge 
wasn't getting there.  Hooked a jumper cable from the ground on battery to 
the block using this instead of the ground wire for ground....sucker started 
up like a champ!!!
New starter...................................$80 (wasn't needed)
New 2GA ground wire setup.........$10
Learning to test before throwing parts at my car..... Priceless!
