IS My auto tranny finally giving up the ghost?

Tony's tranny has a 2nd gear band, but no first gear band, so there is no way to adjust or fix problems with 1st gear engagement short of a rebuild (at least as far as I know).
Also Tony installed some sort of ATF intended for high mileage trannies, so I would assume that would do the trick.
There were a fair amount of small metallic particles in the pan. Not clutch or band friction material and not a very fine grit like you might expect considering the clutches and band. Bigger bits. Never a good sign.
I'd like to do an autopsy, just for shits and giggles, given the opportunity.

Try some ford type F fluid if you just want to make the thing last as long
as possible. Have you adjusted the first gear band at all?

I had a '90 Jetta coupe with auto trans  that i was able to make driveable
by tightening the band and using type f fluid, as type f has more friction
additives in it than other fluids
