Right. "American" is just a shorthand expression for a citizen of the 
United States of America. In the context of (national) origin or 
citizenship people usually identify themselves with a nation/country. To 
my knowledge there is no other county that includes "of America" in its 
  name. When asked "Where are you from?", a Peruvian, for example is 
more likely to answer "Peru" rather than "South America", "the 
Americas", "Western Hemisphere" or "Earth". Now, if Peru becomes "Peru 
of America" . . .

On another list, heavily populated by citizens of England, someone asked 
if the English considered themselves "European". Many did, and many 
didn't. Another conundrum.

Scirocco content: When someone asks me where my Scirocco is from, 
Germany is implied, so, of course, I answer "Onasbruck".
