I was wondering that too, I know here and there there will be biases for or
against them.  (On this forum, the general bias is against I think, maybe
because there is "more buck" needed to get a "wrong side" Scirocco intake
than you'd need for a Golf/Jetta version) I've gotta really get out and
drive mine. (I go to move the MkI to get it out, and, well, I just don't
get out of the MkI!)

1987 16V - unported 1.8 over 2L with the fifty, makes power "up there"
1979 8V that's just getting driven and driven... oh! -> :D 

PS: (and I was under the impression that there was more meat to play with
on the 2L head, making it a better porting candidate? No matter, I'm
keeping mine as it is)
