It looks as if that's a platinum plug.  Even if it physically fits,
conventional wisdom (among the Mercedes gurus, anyway) is that you
don't use platinum plugs in anything older than 1992.  Poor idle is
the main complaint when used with older ignitions.  I'm not sure what
the collective opinion and experience is re: VWs.. but I'm sure you'll
get it.

I completely agree.  Platinums like the higher compression motors in my
experience, IE 10 to 1 or better.  If you use them in the lower compression
motors, they seem to foul prematurely...
