Pics of the scirocco and a question about a hose

I decided to take a couple of pictures of the scirocco to show what I am
up against (which photo bucket decided to make smaller than needed). So
without further adoo:

The car is at the bottom, just ignore the funny looking guy with long
hair and bad lighting.

The question is about the loose hose picture. What is that hose? The
yellow one with the black sleeve on it that looks like it should go to
one of those two holes on that cylinder sticking off of the engine
block. When I got the car it was like that.

An update on the car. I got the front brakes done and need to go to the
back. When I pulled the parking brake to help prevent it from moving
while working on the front brakes I heard a snap. The driver side
parking brake cable snapped a few inches below the lever. I can get one
next week from any one of the local FLAPS or I could go to L-5 Vee Dub
on tuesday and get one (I like this guy because he put a V8 in an S-10)
or I can go to Autocraft (vw junkyard and parts specialist, someone I
talked to said that L5 can get anything, autocraft has everything) who I
have not talked to yet because he closed at noon today.

After all that rambling I have a question. Should I replace both cables
or just the one that broke? Also should I wait to replace it until I
have the rear brakes off for replacing the shoes?

Oh, and Gordy's handles came in today. I replaced the pass door handle
and it works. My springs look just like your's and my gaskets are worse.
Your's have rolled edges, mine have sun baked and cracked edges. I will
keep the other handle in reserve.
