[TECH] Detecting bad rings

You can check for bad valve stem seals by letting it decelerate in gear.
I usually rev out 3rd gear, leave it in gear, and just let off the gas. If
it's the seals, then it will start smoking pretty bad before you slow down
to 25~30MPH.

If it's a high mileage engine, it's probably the bottom end.

Have you done a compression check on it? If it's low, like under 100FT/LBS,
and adding oil to the cylinder increases it, then it's the rings.

What engine is it?

Is the air filter getting oil on it?

What is a sure fire way of finding out if you have a head problem or a block
problem?

I'm burning 1 quart of oil every 200-250 miles and I want to know if my
rings are bad or if it is something in the head. I'm guessing bad rings.

Let me know,
