[16v] Front spring swap

Subject: [16v] Front spring swap

Any way of removing the front springs without removing the strut?  I 
have a set of lowering springs I need to install, but I don't want to 
mess with my alignment.  I'm hoping I can lower the control arm as far 
as I can, but will that be enough to get the spring off the strut? 
Should I pull the ball joint? Swaw bar?
