Cams

Assuming you're looking at TT website, 288 clearly says "race".
As far as the carb info, I think you're looking at the 8V hydraulic section.

I'd definitely skip the 288 unless you really intend to race the engine and
it's been race prepared.
As far as the 276, in order to use a big cam the rest of the engine needs to
be modified appropriately. Putting big cams in an otherwise stock engine
will kill the low end and midrange torque with little gain on the top end.
To use a big cam, the head needs to have some porting work, headers or a
free flow manifold and downpipe, and a 2.25" exhaust. Without those mods,
you'll just loose performance.

Trust me. Having an engine that has no torque till 4000 RPM (and a stock 1.8
16V comes pretty close to this IMO) is a pain in the ass.
I'd follow Cathy's lead and get a Euro intake cam or on the cheap modify an
exhaust cam for the intake. Then start working on the other areas of the
engine to support the airflow that bigger cams can supply.
