SPAM-LOW: Re: 90mm Axle Question

I ran into the same thing, the last time I bought a rebuilt axle, and I went
with the GTI axles.

The driver's side axle came with a 100mm outer joint and a 90mm inner joint.

I figured this out, when the outer CV joint, started to bind on the inside
of the hub carrier, as I tightened the 30mm nut.

I put the 90/100mm axle away, and used a good used axle I had, and the axle
came in handy, after I had the fender(wheel) bender at Waterfest. The outer
CV came apart, and the wheel took the brunt of the impact.
I replaced the hub carrier with a 16V hub carrier, and pressed in a new
bearing, (so I can use 100mm axles for my 2006 Antique 2L16V Motronic swap),
and was able to use the new rebuilt 90/100mm axle.

The A1 90/100mm driver's side axle, also fits all A2 90mm cars, since all
the A2 hub carriers accept 100mm axles.

It's odd that the outer joints would be different on the autos.

I'd call my FLAPS, and have them look it up.

And don't forget about the collar issue on the outer joint. Just last night
I went to purchase a set of re-man's ($60 each + core BTW!) and asked for
the units from a '84 Rabbit (I usually ask for Rabbit parts on the general
A1 stuff because of the stupid, empty looks I get when I say "scirocco").
After we get the usual automatic/manual question out of the way, he asks me
"regular rabbit or GTi"! WTF?? He brought out the regular 90mm golf unit
which had the collar and the GTi unit which didn't...my '81S of course has
the non-collar'd units...

Either way, I'd take the one you have to wherever you're going to get your
replacement to compare.
